Farewell 再见

No matter how busy I am, I must go to Ipoh to attend Lina's funeral. Likewise with Fr. Lawrence Ng, Rose, Faustina and many others.

In the short few months, most of the time in hospital bed, Lina has touched many hearts with her suffering, courage and faith.

I have not seen her since her discharge from Tung Shin Hospital about four months ago. I must bid her farewell .... by attending her funeral Mass.

As Fr. Cheah, the parish priest of St. Michael Church in Ipoh said in his homily:" although we do not know her well (she returned from England only a year ago), but she has touched the hearts of many... even those from Kuala Lumpur....".

Her mother told me that Lina wished to have a gathering chit-chat with those she knew (in hospital bed) when she is able...

Yes, Lina, we shall have the session in the bosom of our blessed Mother ..... May your soul rest in the peace of the Lord. Amen.

Happy marriage

Lucia & John (left 4th & 5th),

On Boxing day, I fulfilled a promise made a year ago to my youngest God daughter in JB.

Last December, Lucia (Xiao Mei) from Ulu Tiram came with his boy friend John for our get together(see My god-daughters) in Johor Baru. They informed us that they were getting married on 26th December 2009 and wished we could come. They knew each other for more than 7 years.

On Saturday 26th, Pauline and I were the witness at the wedding of Lucia and John at the Church of the Holy Family, Ulu Tiram.

May God bless this newly wed happy and harmonious marriage life.

I will happily love you until your teeth dropping off !

Passing 离开

We arrived home from JB at about 1:00pm. We left early to avoid the expected heavy traffic on highways.

At about 2:30 pm, Fr. Lawrence Ng called me saying he was on the way to Ipoh with 2 legionaries to visit Lina who was in critical condition.

Lina was the girl admitted to Tung Shin Hospital about 7 months ago (see I pray) for cancer treatment. She was discharged and went back to Ipoh after treatment in June. She enjoyed a few months of home life.

Last night, I also received a call from Ipoh by Sr. Theresa regarding Lina's worsening condition. She visited Lina again this morning but she was already unconscious.

At 4:10 pm, Anna Chang, who was with Fr. Lawrence, called me to inform that Lina passed away before their arrival.

May her soul rest in the peace of the Lord.

It is Christmas

We decided to spend Christmas with our aged parents (parents in law) in Johor Baru.

The pre-holiday traffic was not heavy but rained heavily along the highway after Melaka. It was cloudy in Johor Baru with intermittent drizzle, cooling the temperature.

Arrived at Johor Baru at about 3:00 pm. A SMS from Sibu informing me that a Catholic brother was admitted to ICU in Hospital UKM (HUKM) Cheras in critical condition and needed a priest to administer the Sacrament of Anointing (to give Christ's blessing and spiritual strength to the sick and dying) .

Contacted priests in St. Francis Asisi Church in Cheras which is nearest to HUKM through call and SMS. Fr. Andrew Manikam responded immediately. He was in Kuala Lumpur attending some matters but will be at the hospital in about 2 hours time. He requested members of the family to wait for him at the ICU.

At 5:25 pm, received SMS from Fr. Andrew informing me that Sacrament of Anointing had been administered to the patient John Tang.

Grateful thanks from the family and myself for Fr. Andrew's quick response to the need of the sick.

May Christmas brings joy and hope to all. God bless our priests.

Recycling 再循环

We have to bid sad farewell to our old and reliable Airpot. It had served us faithfully for more than 24 years!

Finally, the plastic open/close catch broke.

We sent it to Aunty Wong Sai Mooi to sell as scrap for recycling.

Talking about recycling, please reuse your wrappers of milk powder, coffee, Milo, groundnuts.... for keeping vegetable fresh in the refrigerator.

A lazy afternoon

Yesterday evening, en route to Seremban to visit my second elder sister who suffered a mild stroke a week ago, we stopped by the FARM.

It is the best time of the day to be there. The sun light rested lazily on the leaves before setting. The shades provided cool air. Cool breeze started blowing.... birds singing their last songs before heading homes for the night.

For two hours brief stop, fresh air, cool breeze, trees, flowers, birds singing... rejuvenated my tired body.

Before sunset, we left for Seremban. My sister was recovering from slight memory lapse, otherwise, physically, she was fine.

My praesidum (我的支团)

My praesidium’s recent application to break off to form a second praesidium due to increase in membership has attracted the attention of our spiritual director. (A praesidum is a unit of Legion of Mary usually consists of 10 to 12 members)(see My Praesidium)

Rev. Fr. George Harrison, the assistant parish priest attended our weekly meeting recently. In his own word, “this is my first meeting” with the Chinese legionaries since his transfer to the parish 3 years ago.

Fr. George is an Indian but speaks fluent Mandarin. Two years of study in Taiwan enabled him to read and write Mandarin with ease. He also speaks Tamil, English and Bahasa Malaysia.

By attending the full meeting, Fr. George had a better knowledge of Legion system and functions, especially its active works. Fr. George was impressed by members’ weekly active works especially the visitations. The legionary’s works encompassed the whole parish. By listening to the report of members, parish priests would have a better knowledge of the parish especially the poor, the sick and the aged.

My praesidium was founded more than 53 years ago and is the oldest organization in the Parish of the Holy Family. It went through thick and thin, good and bad times but remains strong and resilient.

In September, the praesidium welcomed its 18th member to fill up the entire rectangular meeting table. This gave birth to the idea of splitting the praesidium in two. A request was sent to the parish priest for approval. ( Legion members are required to report their weekly active works during the meeting. Too many members may prolong the stipulated 1 ½ hour meeting).

Fr. George’s full participation of the meeting with a humble heart enabled him to experience the Legion spirituality through members’ prayer and active works.

This is the Legion spirit.

Many members of the praesidium aged above 60 and the oldest one being 83 but are all active and committed. Besides prayers, they undertake active works and make weekly visitation, usually on Tuesday, to hospitals, nursing homes, dialysis centers, homes of sick and aged.

Due to my work, I am not able to join them on weekdays. I am very touched by them. They are my role model that motivate me to do visitation whenever I am able.

The Legion Handbook says:[ The Legion without its spirit would be like any other lifeless body. That spirit of the Legion, so transforming of its members, is not floating around in the air, waiting to be breathed in. No! that vital spirit is the product of grace out of effort. It depends on the work which is being done, and on the way in which it is being done by the individual legionaries. If there is no effort, the spirit flickers low and may die] (Pg 287- Active work must be done).

The Legion spirit is the motivation and pillar of strength of members. Maintaining the spirit will see the legion continues to be relevant, to spread the Good News of the Lord till the end of times.

As for the second praesidum, Fr. George advised to keep on hold but subject to review from time to time according to further development of the praesidium.

The Nangka planter

The Nangka trees ( background)

The planter I am talking is the Nangka planter, not the big time khaki-pant orang putih (white man) planters of rubber estates during the colonial time.

But both planters needed land to plant. The orang putih cleared jungle to plant rubber trees, the Nangka planter planted Nangka trees to keep the land clear.

More than 10 years ago, half of the six-acre Holy Family cemetery land was still covered with old rubber trees. Due to complaints from the nearby residents (falling leaves, mosquitoes, snakes) and soil erosion, the rubber trees were chopped down.

But undergrowth and erosion remained a problem. So the church decided to allow a parishioner free use of the land to plant banana trees in order to keep the land clear of undergrowth.

The banana project was not successful. The land was left wild for a while and maintenance was a major concern. That's was when Robert Tan volunteered to clear up the land and planted Nangka trees.

The initial costs of buying seedlings, fertiliser, engaging labourers must be quite a substantiate amount. The trees fruit only after two to three years. However, the Nangka trees kept the land clean and tidy.

Robert and his wife Jenny

Robert is a generous man. I do not see much profit he obtained from selling Nangka fruits, lest recouping his initial investment. It is not commercially viable because of the small acreage. The proceeds is just enough for maintaining the land - paying labourers, fertilizer....

He is happy seeing the place clean. He enjoys what he is doing partly it gives him some exercise. He obliges friends that asking for fruit (and mostly free of charge) ... me being one of them. Besides that he too has to put up with "fruit thieves" that come in to steal.

After the trees matured and fruiting, he has suggested to hand over the Nangka trees to the church (he asked for no payment). However, looking after an orchard small it is, is no easy task. So.... no taker.... but I am sure many talkers!

The Holy Family Catholic Cemetery looks serene and peaceful with the Nangka trees as the backdrop... it is far cry from the day when undergrowth... falling trees... mosquitoes.... formed the unsightly picture of the cemetery.

I personally would like to thank Robert for his hard work...... I was the head of the Cemetery Committee then (I stepped downed 3 years ago), and was having headache over the old rubber trees, and later the unused land until Robert came to the rescue.

Robert is a good wise man. He plants not only good Nangka trees, also has planted many trees of good value and virtue in many hearts, young and old, through his good deed and example.

He is my mentor. I can consult him on any matter, any time. He has a heart of gold and a stomach that can sail a ship.(Chinese saying: a prime minister's stomach can sail a ship, which means "big heart", "forgiving" "bears no grudge")

He is a retired teacher. He spends most of his time for the service of the church and people. He is an Archdiocesan formator in BEC building and Christian leadership.

Wah.... quite a long story! And this is just a small part of the planter story .... If I write more on his jokes ...... it will be "a different story"... (more picture at bottom)

The fruit

From picture, you know Robert and I are friends for decades (center - Miss Kong (deceased)

The colors of Kajang.

Today being a public holiday (Selangor Sultan's birthday), my wife and I went to Kajang Market for breakfast and to buy some vegetables and dry stuff.

Besides the designated stalls inside the market building, there are many "temporary" hawkers (illegal) lining the road and available space, taking advantage that no enforcement officers would come during the public holiday.

"Cari makan" (earning a living) is not an easy task.

1 wedding, 2 Nangka, 3 ladies 1

The wedding

The is a story of a wedding, 2 Nangka (Jack fruit), 3 ladies and a planter

My wife's elder sister's second son Kenneth got married on Saturday December 5 at the Assumption Church Petaling Jaya.

The Church was decorated fittingly for the wedding. The choir sang very well. After all, many Catholics (and non-Catholics) attend wedding Mass expecting the singing and decoration be The most important parts of a wedding .......

Father Simon Lebroy conducted the ceremony smoothly and beautifully but somehow was distracted by...... himself ! Or we were distracted by him?!?!

Before the Mass, the commentator already announced that " please turn off your hand phone or change to silent mode.... photograph taking only allow during marriage rite and signing of register...."

During the Mass, Fr. stopped 3 times to remind, warn and "scolded" the photographers that Mass was a solemn celebration and no movement allowed except ..........

He must have watched "attentively" the movement of photographers.... he was being distracted ....and every one was being distracted and looking left..right and back to see "who" has faulted!

Catholics who respect the Mass and the ceremony, should know what and when to do and not to do certain things...

Outside photographers, friends and relatives who are not Catholics must be warmly welcomed by someone into the church before Mass and brief on the flow of the ceremony and the do and don't.

This is to avoid unnecessary "tension" to the otherwise beautiful ceremony.

3 ladies came all the way from Singapore to attend this celebrations. They are Pauline's cousins Jenny, Janet and her daughter Evelyn. Jenny and Janet are sister.

They came on Friday and put up in our house.

And I got 2 Nangka fruits from Robert Tan, the planter. Jenny (the younger sister) and Janet love Nangka.

The Nangka Robert planted are crunchy and sweet. Jenny and Janet loved it very much. In Singapore, they could not get this type of Nangka...... only sweet and soft type.

And I am an expert in cutting Nangka ... without using OIL! I have secret liquid to clean the latex ... not oil which is messy (oily).

The story is getting much too long so I will talk about the planter in next posting.

TV news

The 10:30 pm "Headline news" in Astro AEC channel is a very popular news programme. It highlights most headline news in major Chinese newspapers. The lively and animated style of the presenters attracted not only Chinese speaking viewers but also English educated like my wife!

After watching the programme, reading next day's papers seems unnecessary.

However, like most of the Chinese news readers in other TV stations (e.g. RTM 2), the presenters often seemed to be "overdressed" (like above picture).

Astro AEC

Vincent Lim

Today afternoon, the above pictured cool handsome man came to visit me at my Sg Buloh office. He is none other than Vincent Lim, the Vice-Chairman of Kuala Lumpur Archdiocese Chinese Language Apostolate Commission (KL-ACLA).

He brought me a Christmas music CD produced by a group of youth to spread the good news of Christ. They are young adults from Bentong, Mantin and Kuala Lumpur, and many of them are non-Christians. Later we went for coffee at a nearby coffee shop.

Vincent is a successful Insurance agent specializing in Saving policy.
