The year 1989 年

The June 29 issue of Time magazine is a summer journey double issue ... looking back 20 years ago, the fateful year 1989 that transforming the world... even until today!

I picked 3 main events out of many that affected my life....

1. The collapse of the Berlin wall and the communist regime of the People's Democratic Republic of Germany (East Germany). My wife was working in the East German Embassy then. The unification of Germany saw the closure of the East German Embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

My wife and I have the opportunity to witness the lowering of the East German flag for the last time on Unification day by the Charge d'affair of the Federal Republic of Germany Embassy (West Germany) in Kuala Lumpur.

We are still keeping the metal sign board of the East German Embassy.

My wife later "crossed over the wall" to join the Federal Republic of Germany Embassy.

2. The World Wide Web (WWW). In 1989, an English physicist Tim Berners-Lee invented the first browser call WorldWideWeb. Web surfing, email, blogging has changed my life.

3. The Tiananmen Square massacre. June 4 1989 saw the China Communist regime using military force to crush the students occupying the square. I did not feel much then. Later when more details surfaced, I felt for the suffering of the students and right activists. The persecution of right and democracy advocates continues even till today.

Also mentioned was on March 24 1989, a tanker named Exxon Valdez with 53 million gallons of Alaskan crude oil, ran aground just after midnight, releasing more than 11 million gallons of "black gold' polluting the beautiful Alaskan coastline and wilderness. It was the worse environmental disaster in American history.

Currently, my wife is on an Alaskan cruise vacation. I shall find out from her on her return whether Alaskan coastline has recovered fully from the disaster after 20 years.

In February 1989, a satellite was launched into orbit 12000 miles above the earth. This was the first of 24 satellites forming the global positioning system (GPS). Today, I use my GPS device to guide me going places.

Where was I then 20 years ago? I was in Kajang happily bringing up my three adorable children. Looking at the pictures taken in 1989, I wished can turn back the time...... How much I loved them...but their childhood has gone .... they have all grown up now!

Who can be trusted

In a latest annual survey released by the Royal College of Physicians in Great Britain, doctors have been named the profession most trusted by the public, followed by teachers, professors, judges and clergymen/priests completing the top five.

I am sure the finding is not applicable to Malaysia. With the highly commercialized medical services, doctors are the most needed persons but not the most trusted people to many men and women on the street.

A complaint of stomachache can cost you a bomb. In most private hospitals, you find yourself attended by three to four specialists, charging you with each visit, running medical tests which you have no faintest idea. I called it the referral practice. Specialist A would refer you to Specialist B, B to C, C to D then back to A. From consultant physician to consultant surgeon, to gastroentrologist ... to god knows who!?

In fact, medical profession top the number of complaints among government departments according to the government's Public Complaint Bureau's figure.

The fourth placing was accorded to judges. That is in England... not in Malaysia. With the many high profile cases, Lingham incident, Mahathir's strong arm twisting with justice during his tenure, the dramatic revelation by judges themselves, the judiciary has just come out of the darkest hours and is facing public confidence crisis at this movement.

May be it is a good idea to have our own survey....!

I must let out...

(Re-edited)

In recent weeks, some events and people really made me fuming and cursing.... angry, frustrated, laughing and yelling. I must let out........

On Nov 9, the beast-like Policemen charged into a peaceful crowd who were merely holding candles in a park. They manhandled and arrested 24 people, including a member of Parliament, a State Assemblyman and a priest. If the overzealous policemen didn't disrupt this gathering, at the end of the night, everyone would just go home to sleep, no harm to property and people, no disruption of peace. It would be just another peaceful night, in a peaceful country with peace-loving people living peaceful lives.

The uncivilised and violent Police behavior has something to do with the Head of Police (IGP). He publicly dressed down his subordinate, the Traffic Police Chief, for not informing him of an operation by the Traffic Department of arresting traffic offenders who did not pay up their summons. He ordered a postponement. Really malu. What police force is this? No credibility, inefficient administration and uncivilised - publicly scolding his own senior officer.

Arrest! no arrest.... made us like fools but they are the actual fools.

Then we saw the realease of Abdul Razak Baginda, the accused in Altantuya's murder case. He was free to go "given the benefit of doubt solely based on his own statement."

I know nothing about law but I agreed with many people's opinions : "There is no desire of the prosecution to establish a prima facie case..."; "Justice not only must be done but must be seen to be done. In Altantuya's case, that has not been exhibited."

Rubbing salt to the wound, after his release, Abdul Razak Baginda held a press conference on 21/11/o8 to declare that his good friend the Deputy Prime Minister has not met Altantuya and his wife was not involved in the murder case.... who was he to tell the world about this... who was he to Najib?

He was just like the thief in the Chinese story who has stolen 300 silver pieces and buried in the ground. In order not to arouse suspicion of others to dig out the silver pieces, he placed a signboard on it reading" No 300 silver pieces here".

I agreed with Raja Petra Kamaruddin: " ... send the murderers of Altantuya to hell....".

The latest news was the banning of Muslim to practise Yoga by the National Fatwa Council. Actually, this is strictly a Muslim affair. It was the reasons given that made me fuming.

The council chairperson Dr Abdul Shukor Husin said although the physical aspect of yoga, excluding worshiping and chanting, might not be wrong in Islam, the exercise should be avoided by Muslims as "doing one thing could lead to another".

"We discourage Muslims from practising yoga as a form of exercise because it will ultimately lead to religious worshiping and chanting which is against Islam.

Oooh ooh ! I must discipline myself not to see too much of beautiful ladies.. one thing can lead to another. Scandalous-maaan! BUT Ladies, don't worry, I only admiring.... the animals only can be led to do the "another".

To my Buddhists and Taoist friends, keep working on Sundays. If you follow the world (western) practice of resting on Sundays, it may lead you to Church to worship... Jesus le!

Then our Jeanne-loving PM Abdullah came to the rescue. He said: " Muslims can continue practising yoga as long as no elements of worship or mantras are involved ".

There is a Chinese saying " Blind man touching the elephant". If the blind man touches the ear, then he will say: "ah ! elephant is round and thin". If touches the leg, "ah! elephant is like a tree, tall and round."

The fact is: These "not blind" men, including Prime Minister, may have never stepped into a studio or a gym to see how Yoga is being practised in Malaysia. Or bothered to find out themselves, WHAT IS YOGA?. They are worse than blind man. They are not only blinded in sight (have eyes but cannot see) but also their hearts too!

I have practised Yoga for more than 10 years, my wife more than 15 years. We did not chant, did not worship, did not change our religion. We practised Yoga for health... not hell or for that matter, not heaven either!

My faith is not that shaky and paper-thin that easily influenced by others or dictated by others of what to do or not to do.

This is the situation in our country....a lot of people blinded by hatred, religious fanaticism, prejudice, racism, greet and self interest. The image of our country especially the Government under BN also reflected in our " bastard " members of Parliament! Sorry teacher, the word "bastard" is not vulgar but very parliamentary. It is frequently spoken in the Parliament of Malaysia and it is acceptable.

On Nov 6 parliamentary session, BN Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman shouted at Kulasegaran, Opposition MP of Ipoh Barat :"You bloody bastard! You picked the wrong guy! You settle this with me! Outside!".

When other MPs complained to the Speaker to take action against such behavior and language, the Speaker replied: "....... But to make Parliament lively, me and my deputies have many times pretended not to hear the words that were uttered......". The Opposition MPs condemned his behaviour but none from the Barisan Nasional (BN).

This showed up what type of coalition BN is. As one BN MP pointed out outside the parliament (BN has a standing order to its members - one for all, all for one. To defend or keep quiet on fellow members in Parliament) that "the standing of the Barisan , Government and Parliament is tarnished..... Barisan is paying a heavy price because of the boorish behaviour of a few MPs."

You can see more antics of this "bastard" MP Tajuddin in today's newspapers on other issues and occasions. I do not want to dirty my Blog further. He and few others MPs are disgrace of the nation.

Then we have the Datukship on the begging! Melaka has conferred to Bollywood star Shah Ruk Khan a Datukship for .....$%$@**%..... hold on ! let us check with Datuk Shah Ruk Khan he knows where Melaka is? He was supposed to come to receive his title this month but postponed due to tigh schedule. Well, Datukship can wait. Afterall it is cheap... or at least is cheaper in India.

Oooo ya, Yes, I am feeling better now !

Police violence

My salutation and admiration to the people who attended the candlelight vigil held on Sunday, 9-11-08. They are heroes.

It was a peaceful vigil. However, they were savagely attacked by the wild dog-like police without any provocation while singing Negara Ku, the National Anthem.

The Police is brutal, uncivilized. They are making themselves the enemy of the people by first treating the peace loving-people as their sworn enemy.

The Police is the culprit who disturbs the peace and security of the people.

people's voctory 人民胜利

For the past three years, 51 households in Rawang New Village lived in fear and anxiety. Their ancestral homes and properties would be demolished to make way for a TNB High Tension Power line project. Compensation was not satisfactory. They have resisted the acquisition through their then Barisan State Assemblyman and Member of Parliament (Transport Minister Chan Kong Choy) but to no avail. They were made running round the bush. They took TNB to court. While waiting for court decision, they are constantly on the lookout for any new move by TNB.

With the change of new State Government, they received good news yesterday. The Mentri Besar of Selangor announced that the TNB would have to reroute the project. The 51 properties are saved.

The Pakatan Raayat Mentri Besar Khalid made a visit to the site and brought the good news to the villagers. He said:" ...can make money, can buy land, but do not disrupt the lives of citizens..."

This is the triumph of the people power ! This news was not reported in any main stream English newspapers.

As a kampong boy (born and bred in new village), I cheered for the news. As I have said to the Perak Government's move to grant permanent land title to the villages in Perak, same to the Selangor Government for the people-friendly policy, I am giving them five years mandate plus another five more years to come. It is worthy !

Home is a sacred place. Government should not rob people the ownership of a house at its wimp and fancy.

change lifestyle

In the evening, SMSs were flying around from friends regarding imminent increase in petrol and diesel prices. Yes, it was confirmed. Petrol price has increased RM0.78 per litre to RM2.70/Litre, Diesel added RM 1.00 per litre at RM2.58 / Litre.

The effect is far reaching. Transporters, bus operators are sounding their trumpets of 100 % increase in their charges and fare. It means every item on our dining table will cost more.

For me alone, my personal petrol expenses will increase by RM 200.00 based on four fillings per month. For my lorry, it will cost RM 700.00 per month.

The cost of my goods will be increased due to expected rise in transport charges.

As for the petrol station owners, their financial burden is heavier. For every tanker load of petrol of 25,000 litres, they have to pay extra RM19,500.00. And for diesel, it is RM25,000.00 per load. Oil companies do not give credit. You can see more stations reluctant to accept credit cards. So you may see more stations telling you the credit card service is offline.....

We have to change our lifestyle. It is more costly to drive now. Be prudent and thrift. Even eating out is expensive. My driver just complained to me that a piece of dosei costing RM0.80 now is being charged at RM1.60.....

More bad news are coming..... of costlier living!

Persecution begins

The persecution begins !

Raja Petra, the owner and Editor of Internet news portal Malaysiakini, has been arrested and charged for Sedition. The charges based on an article he wrote " Let's send the Altantuya murderers to hell" in Malaysiakini, implicating the Deputy Prime Minister and his wife in the murder of the Mongolian woman. Another person, Syed Akbar Ali, was also charged because he posted a "seditious" comment on the article.

Karpal Singh was warned he may be charged under the same Sedition Act because he has commented that the Sultan of Perak has no jurisdiction over the transfer of Perak Head of Religious Department.

Sedition Act is the second most powerful instrument next to the Internal Security Act used by the Government. Lim Guan Ying, the current Chief Minister of Penang was sent to jail for 2 years under this act.(He was charged under Sedition Act and Publication and Printing Act).

More are coming !!

By the way, those vultures, blood suckers and opportunist shouting at Karpal Singh, demanding him to apology to the Sultan, are they making seditious statement and demand too? They are putting words into Sultan's mouth! Or making use of the name of Sultan for personal gain?
