Ruegen Island

More than 60 million years old white chalk cliff coastlines

We are in Ruegen Island for the last three days.

Ruegen Island is the largest island and favourite tourist destination in the Baltic Sea.

Beautiful beaches, forest and parks, beautiful flowers especially roses.....

Due to my computer software glitches, I have problem to load pictures to Facebook. And story without pictures is dull story…. so no story……. may be later.

Big big roses everywhere

Picturesque home

Dresden is a beautiful city, blending old and modern together. The Wifi at the hotel lobby was slow, loading a photo takes almost a minute. I shall share beautiful Dresden pictures on a later post.

Day moves on and we go on to the next destination.

On 25/6/2012, we arrived at the home of Angelica and Martin Paege, which was nestled in a picturesque meadow and lakeside in a village in Joachimsthal.

The home is tastefully decorated and the view from the house is breathtaking.

Mrs Paege, ever graceful and cheerful lady, has something in store for us …..I have my first home-cooked, authentic famous German pork knuckle (Aisbein) … and it is great beyond my imagination!

Mr. Paege is living history. He has been through thick and torn in life, living through world wars, separation of Germany, unification of Germany …

He had traveled widely and stayed in many countries and cities of the world, including Kuala Lumpur. He told us many life-experienced stories and history of his country, and interesting stories of his overseas stay.

Joachimsthal is hometown of Mr. & Mrs. Paege.

A great place, great company and great ……FOOD !!

We bid goodbye to Mr. & Mrs Paege after afternoon tea, expressing our gratitude and appreciation of their hospitality and generosity, left for Rugen Island with Wendlandts at about 4:45 pm.

Story of a small town

22/6/2012

The weather was great when we arrived at Lubbenau, a small town famous for pickled cucumber (Kurgen) and Spreewald – a thousand kilometers of waterway (canal) covering forested islands and lowland.

We boarded a man-powered boat for a 3-hour round trip along designated section of waterway. Cool breeze, blue sky, fresh air, quiet atmosphere, it was a great ride and a wonderful experience.

On the same day, an international dance festival was held in the town, we saw participants from many countries in colourful costume taking the boat ride too.

We continued our journey to Dresden after tea.

Berlin 柏林

Today we learned a lot about the history of Germany through tour guide and our learned host Mr. Gerd Wendlandt.

China is a country with thousands years of history and recorded many great events of war and peace. However, these events only had impacted internally and rarely the world outside.

Germany has a much shorter history, but many events happened in the country had great impac and influence internally and internationally.

We visited many locations and building, by bus and foot, where great historical events taken place, and their effect rippled throughout the world.

Berlin is a beautiful city with broad tree-lined roads and history in every inch of soil.

21-6-2012 I was in Berlin, a moment of history of my life ..... It was a great day.

(see all pictures in Facebook)

A day in Potsdam

I am a country pumpkin going out to the city.

Everything is new to me especially in Germany. Mr. Gerd Wendlant is driving a car equipped with new technology... one of them is the cutting off of engine while waiting at the traffic light.

He is driving a diesel Volvo, comfortable and spacious. If the waiting at the traffic light is too long, the engine can be cut out ( off ) while other accessories are still running. When traffic light turns green, at an instant, the engine is turn on again go.... (my daughter was telling me about this new technology in UK and I experienced it in Germany).

On the second day, our gracious host ( The Wendlants) prepared a sumptuous German breakfast for us. I loved it and it was the best German breakfast ( western) I ever had. (see pictures to appreciate)

After breakfast, our Top Guide (Gerd) led us to a day tour of famous historical sit es and beautiful palace in Potsdam, a city of national and international notability. One of them is the Potsdam Conference 1945 of Stalin, Truman and Churchill to decide the fate of Eastern Europe.

Places visited:

1. The Glienicke brigde, better known as The Spy Bridge where the Soviet block exchanged spies with the Allied especially the American during the Cold War period.

2. The world famous, UNESCO World Heritage San Sanssouci Park where powerful Frederick dynasty built their palaces.

It was a cloudy and drizzling the whole day but it didn't dampened our happy spirit.

We capped an exciting day with a home-cooked Chinese dinner !

(See all pictures in Facebook)

In Germany

We left Glasgow for Berlin in a 8:55 morning flight.

After almost 20 years of yearning, persistent prompting and invitation of my wife’s old colleagues, finally at about 12:00 noon today, I set foot on Berlin, Germany, the historic city that played an important role in shaping the world.

Dorit and Gerd Wendlant were at the airport to welcome us. They were frequent visitors to Malaysia. ( see also German visitors)

From 9 degree cold and rainy weather in Aberdeen, it was a sign of relief to bask in the warm sun of Berlin ( temp 19 degree).

Dorit and Gerd brought us to their cozy and beautifully decorated apartment and treated us my favourite food – German sausages, goose liver with bread.

Later, they brought us to see the historical Check Point Bravo and the original Berlin wall slabs.

Mr. & Mrs Paeger from another city, also came to meet us.

In the evening, we were treated with special asparagus dinner. ( Now is the asparagus season )

It was an exciting first day in Germany.

(see more pics in Facebook)

Dorit & Gerd Wendlant

We were travelling down to Glasgow this evening.

It was sunny all the way from Aberdeen to Glasgow, with temperature rising to 15 degree C.

Glasgow is a city with many grand but old looking buildings. We spent a few hour at the city center.

We will be leaving for a new destination tomorrow morning.

Scotland 4

Another rainy cold morning in Aberdeen.

Today I went for a coastal neighbourhood exploration.

Scotland 3

We are adjusting well to the rainy and cold weather of Aberdeen.

The sky cleared up this morning and offered me an opportunity to walk around the neighbourhood.

Later we went to the city ... my wife did some shopping, and me exploring the Union Street, the center of the city.

We also visited the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University (RGU), the only two universities in Aberdeen.

( more pictures in Facebook )

King's college, University of Aberdeen.

The next day after our arrival was cloudy and cold. It drizzled in the late afternoon.

Not much activity except went grocery shopping.

My wife made a pot of hot chicken soup for dinner, good for cold weather.

It was below 10 degree C and cold for me.

We watched live telecast of Euro 2012 while enjoying our dinner.... Sweden lost to England 3-2 !

Scotland

Facebook)

The whole journey took about 25 hours.

Flight from KL to Dubai took about six and a half hours, and was very tough for us.

The plane took off at 2:00 am Thursday. We were tired but could not sleep. The seats of Emirates Airlines are comfortable, service is good and plenty of food and drink, but it did not help us to sleep except 4o winks in between tossing left and right.

After 3 hours of transit in Dubai airport, we boarded a flight to Glasgow, a seven and a half hours flight.

This sector was better. It was a day flight with fine weather, I can view the scenery outside (or down under). The flight path went through center Asia, passing through Iran and Iraq, may be part of Saudi Arabia. I can see brownish mountain ranges, mostly un-inhabitated, some covered with snow (0r glacier), very beautiful and astonishing!

The plane crossed the Black Sea, entering Europe and saw different scenery. I saw cultivated land and townships.

Upon arrival in Glasgow, we took a car journey of another 3 hours to reach our destination - Aberdeen of Scotland.

We are here to attend our youngest daughter Mei's graduation in July, and take the opportunity for tour and sightseeing. We will stay a few weeks in Europe。

God blessed us with fine weather upon our arrival, from cloudy in the morning to sunny in the afternoon. Temperature 9-15 degree C.

Leaving KL on Thursday morning, arriving Aberdeen at about 5:00 pm local time, it took us more than 25 hours to complete the journey (flight time, stopover, car journey plus coffee break).

WWW number plate tender

The impending 13th general election must have gotten on the nerves of politicians, making them crazy and loosing control .... saying dumb things, doing crazy things ....

Nizar, the well-liked former mentri besar of Perak, commented on Sultan of Johor's RM 520,000.00 winning bid for the car number plate WWW 1 as "wasteful".

In Malaysia, it is a taboo and foul of law to criticize the Sultans or royalty. The UMNO played up the issue. Police has recorded statement from him pending further investigation ... However, he is a brave fellow expressing opinion most Malaysians kept in their stomach!

(Last week, former Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin said: “If royalty cannot be disputed, this means the rakyat (people) has deified them; this is because only God cannot be disputed by the people. As long as a member of the rakyat uses proper language and arguments, it is unreasonable for him or her to be punished for the criticism.)

On another car number tender fiasco, Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai's RM24,200.00 winning bid of WWW 15 landed him in hot soup.

He has made himself a clown at a press conference when questioned by reporters on who pay for the number .... he fumbled and gave round-the-bush answer, making himself silly and foolish.
"unsure who had forked out the money, but was certain that his ministry did not foot the bill"

When asked why paid such a big sum for such number plate, he skirted the question and said he did not know what the cost was when the bid was made. (what a ^%$%^^son of b##$$ minister talking!)

MCA president Chua Soi Lik, the man who has everything to say on anything, has to answer for him. And yet he gave a dumber answer saying the money is going to a government consolidated fund (??), like right hand giving to the left hand.....

They gave dumb dumb answers except one smart and honest one needed from Liow: " Yes, I paid RM24,200.00 for the number and it is for my own private car." period.

{Liow Tiong Lai} and {minister of Health} are excellent brands, is {WWW 15} needed ???

Sheer greed !

-- written 8/6/2012 ...

(more dumb things are being said by Liow even till today....)
