Jet boating

Jet boating is an extreame sport. We enjoyed the ride very much.

On the night before we left New Zealand, I saw from the TV news that an accident occured at 3:00pm at the Shotover river where we were a few days ago. A boat (same as above) crashed and five passengers were injured.

We took the same boat ride and it was really exciting. it was dangerous but safe. Government is investigating the cause of the accident.

Would I ride a again? YES!

Favourite Sunday breakfast

My favourite Laksa + milk tea

It is good to have our favourite Laksa (curry noodle) and Pan Mee (soup flour noodle) again.

Catechetical Jamboree

Two weeks before leaving for holiday, an invitation to conduct a 3-hour session to a group of Mandarin speaking secondary students at our parish year end 3-day Catechetical Jamboree was sent to me.

Knowing the difficulties facing the Mandarin speaking community of finding facilitators, I accepted the invitation even though talking to youth is an unenviable task to me. I am weak in conducting session for youth.

This morning at 9:30 am, I faced a group of 30 enthusiastic youths .... ha ha ... to my surprise, many of them are my Facebook friends!

Their warm welcome settled me immediately....

The theme of the day is "walking with the Lord".

Besides the usual inputs, I sent them out in groups for a "walk with Jesus" to Kajang town, allowing them to see their familiar town through the eyes of Jesus.

A video presentation on the lives of 3 blind, severe mentally impaired youth was screened and discussion followed.

I thought it was a good session.

A total of 380 Catechism students, (primary & secondary schools), from 4 languages participated in this Jamboree. They will have camp fire party tonight.

My greatest respect and appreciation to the teachers and volunteers who have been working very hard towards the organisation of this camp.

Praise the Lord.

Back to work 工作了

Back to work.

Arriving home last night at about 10:30 pm. It was a "grueling" seven hours forty minutes flight on a Boeing 747 Sdyny-KL . It was about 40 minutes faster then KL-Sydney flight on a Boeing 777.

Life is back to normal after finding myself in the office at 8 this morning.

For more than 2 weeks, under the cool weather, no sweat at all. I am felling good after doing some physical work and got my self sweating .... It is good to be back too!

The modern and comfortable departure louge of Sydney Airport

"come and dine with me".

On Father James' invitation, we have dinner last night at his house at the Church of St. Paul of the Cross.

Fr. James is a good cook. The Chinese wine Pork was super-super delicious.

The dinner with Fr. James concluded our wonderful visit to Australia/New Zealand. We would be flying back home today in the afternoon.

Our road trip in New Zealand covered a distance of 2620 km.

We were backed to the warmer Sydney at about 7:30 am local time yesterday (Tuesday). It was warm (23 degree) and clear blue sky.

It was our sixth day in Australia.

We have our favourite Beef Soup Mee and bought some stuff at the supermarket. More Mangoes and cheery.

In the evening, Nam's parents invited us for dinner at a club - Dooley's Catholic Club, a huge building with multi level parking facilities.

Don't expect smiling Wardens like in the church to welcome you. A fierce dog ... a big fierce dog... oopss...actually a huge human being behaving like a dog because he was supposed to guard the entrance to the club by checking on the membership cards.

Actually, it was a Jaga (security guard we called back home) manning the entrance. Sometimes Jaga demand attention and respect ... by showing their authority ... authority to guard. Once in while, an overzealous guard thought of himself a guard DOG and behaved exactly like a DOG! It's (not his) attitude was really &%$#@**!

After passing through the guard dog, Tony and I were seriously considering whether to remove our association with the word CATHOLIC.

Our resolve strengthened after entering the building.

I saw big crowd coming to the club .... 2 different types of crowd at the club. They were not coming to the club for formations, Bible studies, praise and worship .... nothing to do with religion.

I saw big crowd at the restaurant. It served good food with reasonable prices. Customers queuing up to order food.

I saw big crowd at the Casino. There must be more than 200 slot machines of many kinds ..... people putting coins and waiting for the God of Luck to answer their hearts' desire. I was told this Casino generates millions of dollars for the club ...The Catholic Club.

Any way, the dinner with Nam's parents, Li and Pan, was wonderful. The place was nice and comfortable and the food was great.

After dinner, we went back home to have tea.

Bryan has made and sent in the afternoon a Cheese Cake for us to celebrate our upcoming 34th wedding anniversary. He was not with us because of his classes.

At Akaroa

The last day of our holidays in New Zealand. It is sunny, blue sky….and hot!

This is the only day of such weather greeted us for the past 8 days in NZ …and I don’t like this “so good” weather because it is scotching hot under the sun although the temperature is about 15 degree C.

I count our blessings for the past 8 days of cloudy, short sun sunshine, rain and cool.

Today we went to a place out of the beaten track, Akaroa in Banks Peninsular, about 80 kms away. Nothing special to mention until we reached the end of the winding and mountainous road - a beautiful Frenchy seaside resort town – Akaroa.

I guessed majority of the population are French descendants. I saw French flag flying in many buildings and houses.

We have fish and chips, authentic NZ Fish and Chips, for lunch.

At 8:30 pm, we went out for Burger King, authentic NZ beef burger, for dinner.

We are busy packing because we are flying back to Sydney tomorrow morning on 7:00 am flight.

It is a wonderful holidays for us!

Before leaving New Zealand, a thought and prayer to the 29 miners trapped underground. God have mercy. Mother Mary pray for them and their families.

**Due to problem adding caption to photo in Facebook, here are the highlights:
1. A church in Banks Peninsular damaged by earthquake
2. Beautiful scenery of Akaroa and Bangs Peninsular
3. Ice Cream eating sparrows
4. Greedy sea gulls

2.Akaroa

With our comfortable stay at Callies Bed & Breakfast hosted by Jenny and Bruce and their family, our journey to the South Island, especially the scenic lakes and Fiordlland completed with a high note.

After breakfast, we bid farewell to Jenny and Bruce. When we were about to leave, Chris came with yet another Trout he caught at the lake near his house which is slightly down the slope where we stayed.

We were heading back to Christchurch (375 km) which we would stay another 2 nights before going back to Sydney. Enroute, we stopped at Moeraki to see the famous “Moeraki Boulders”.

The boulders are round in shape. These boulders were formed in ancient sea floor sediments through a process similar to the formation of the pearls where layer of materials cover a central nucleus or core.

When we arrived at Oamaru, it was raining heavily, so we drove through the town but did not stop. However, we stopped at Timaru and to our surprise, it is a fairly
big port city. We found Timaru Sacred Heart Basilica, which is very grand and full of history.

It was raining all the way and we arrived at Christchurch at about 7:15 pm. We have Kentucky Fried Chicken for dinner.

Due to the rain, the weather is very cold tonight.

Already one week in New Zealand - the 7th day.

We said goodbye to our friendly and gracious hosts Jane and Dave and the comfortable log cabin (above) at about 10:00pm for Dunedin, a city in the East coast of South Island. It was a journey of about 220 km.

It was raining, windy and a little bit cold and gloomy. We past t
hrough many small towns, one of them is Gore, a beautiful and quiet town. We have coffee at one of the cafe to enjoy the fresh and cool air and quietness of the town. It was 5 degree C.

Arrived Dunedin at about 4:00pm. Dunedin is a coastal city famous for Penguin watching and Albatross conservation.

We drove along the Otago Peninsular, which was opposite the city of Dunedin for accommodation.

We found a nice B&B place and dropped in to inquire. This was the beginning of our good fortune.

Jenny and Bruce, the hosts, are friendly, the place are fantastic, cosy and comfortable. (two rooms + breakfast at NZ 200.00)

Their son-in-law Chris just caught a Trout this afternoon.... we requested them to cook for us dinner.... they happily obligated. Later we learned that Chris was formerly a pro-Chef in a restaurant, now he is doing freelance catering.

The dinner of roast Trout and BBQ Trout were fantastic.....and delicious!

This evening, we have the opportunity to see Albatrosses (flying in the sky), seals at the Fort Taiaroa (the tip of Otago Peninsular) and penguins coming home from hunting after dark.

Day 5 & 6 in New Zealand.

Day 5, 18/11/2010.

After saying goodbye to the capital of adventure, we left for Te Anau, the gateway to Milford Sound.

The drive to Te Anau is another experience. Vast plain, miles and miles of flat pasture land, thousands and thousands of sheep and cows. Great scenery.

Arrived Te Anau, a small town with lakes and snow-capped mountains around 2:00 pm. It is the only route going to Milford Sound, one of the famous Fiordland attractions.

We scouted around town and decided to stay at a cabin motel at NZ $100.00 per cabin per night, a bargain during off peak season. (Peak season starts in December).

We have time to go sightseeing in the nearby places.

We went to Manapouri, a small time 20 kms from Te Anau.

We decided to push further to the southern most city of South Island – Invecagil, about 150 kms from Te Anau.

In New Zealand, government designated some scenic roads for tourist to sample the beautiful country scenery. So we took the scenic road to Invecagil.

Again it was miles and miles of pasture land and rolling hills with tens of thousands of sheep and cows. We passed through many beautiful small townships too.

Please see more pictures on my Facebook. (Queenstown to Te Anau)

Today, sixth day in NZ, we drove 120 km to Mildford Sound. The journey took about 3 hours with many stops and photography sessions.

It was raining in Mildford Sound. We did not see the whole view of the place especially the mountains, but have the opportunity to see hundreds of waterfalls due to rain.

We also saw seals upclose.

We took the small ship to avoid crowd, and it brought us closer to view places especially seals and penguin (saw one only).

It was quite an experience. Please see my Facebook pictures (sixth day).

(Queenstown to Te Anau

Our fourth day in New Zealand. Temperature at 18 degree and slightly cloudy. Cool.

We are at the Adventure Capital of the World, cannot afford not to be tempted by the many activities offered in Queenstown.

Indeed today is an adventurous day for all of us.

At 12:15pm today (New Zealand time) Tony has realized his long held dream by successfully completed his first Bungy jump at Kawarau Bridge, the historical site of world’s first Bungy jump. It was an act of courage and determination.

Later in the afternoon, we bought a package of Shotover Heli Combo ( NZ $265 per person) which consists of :

1. Jet Boating at Shotover river,
2. Scenic helicopter transfer back to Queenstown Skyline Gondola Complex on top of a hill in the city,
3. Skylift,
4. Luge ride and
5. Gondola (cable car) ride back down to the foot hill.

Firstly, Jet Boating. The excitement and fun can only be experienced in person. Speeding at 80 km/h the jet boat swerving and spinning along the beautiful and rocky river canyon course, making many precision maneuvers, passing outcropping rocks by mere inches… 360 degree turns…sheer spectacular show of skill and professionalism by the boat driver and is an unforgettable and breathtaking experience!

After the boat ride, we were taken to a helipad to board a helicopter for 10 minutes return flight to Queenstown. Great view and great experience.

We continue our adventure with Skylift and Luge ride. Quite fun.

At about 5:00pm, we took the Gondola back to the city.

Continued with our adventurous mood, we bought some beef from the Super Market and have a pictureque BBQ picnic by the Lake Side of Wanatipu.

In New Zealand (Australia too), government set up charcoal and electrical BBQ pits for the convenience of her citizens. We cannot have such facilities because of theft and vandalism, but also babi /no babi issue !

Our day ended with a leisure stroll at the Marine Parade (lake side) at about 8:00 pm.

*** Hotel broadband services are sucks! Even expensive hotels give 15-20 minutes free WIFE at lobby only. You have to pay around NZ10.00 for duration of 2 hours (1000MB) from your room… Third world mentality.

Scenery on way to Mt Cook

Day 3 in New Zealand. It was slightly cloudy and cool.

Lake Tekapo left an indelible impression on all of us as a beautiful and idyllic destination. We enjoyed the stay there.

Today we traveled further south, to The Adventure Capital of the world … better known as the founding place of the Bungee Jump – Queenstown.

Immediately after leaving Lake Tekapo, we turned into Mt. John University Observatory which was about 20 minutes away. It was situated on top of a hill, therefore guided tour groups seldom make it here. It is recognized as one of the world best observatories and star gazing spot of the world.

We have a 360-degree view of the whole Lake Tekapo and the surrounding farmlands, hills, valley and the distant snowy mountains.

Then we proceeded to the Aoraki Mt. Cook. The drive to Mt Cook itself was an unforgettable experience … or more appropriately, dream journey. The lake and glacier capped mountains practically appearing right in front of us … so close and so real.

Due to adverse weather condition, we were not able to have a glimpse of peak of Mt. Cook.

We continued towards Queenstown which was about 250 kms away. Roads are straight and flat, snow-capped mountain constantly appeared, many beautiful lakes too as we drove for miles and miles of country roads.

Our trip to New Zealand supposed to be a self-drive, budget journey. However, we changed our minds on certain things, accommodation is one of them.

Again we decided to stay in a lakeside hotel at the heart of Queenstown … so you can guess how much it bites!

But the view is fantastic, the room is comfortable … with Jacuzzi!

Dear children, please do not be envious, old cows deserve some good grass sometimes!

At one of the many beautiful lakes - Lake Pukaki (pull kaki)

On top of Mt John Observatory

Lake Tekapo

Jacuzzi!

Second day in Christchurch.

Cloudy but no rain. The temperature was cool ( like Genting Highlands) with occasional ray of sun broke through the cloud, allowing us a short glimpse of the blue sky. That was enough to get me sun-burned. Sun-block and moisturizer in this region is very important to protect your skin.

Feeling a bit dismay and gloomy, but cheered up when we finally got our rented car – a 2005 Camry at NZ 69.00 per day unlimited mileage. We left Christchurch after breakfast.

We took the scenic road (Highway 72) to Lake Tekapo instead of the normal tourist route. The scene was breath-taking. We went through small townships, rolling hills and many many sheep and cattle. We still have the chance to see the beautiful wild flowers along the way.

We stopped whenever we liked, ate whatever and whenever we chose … Driving along the scenic country roads was such a great relaxed and wonderful experience.

The view near Lake Tekapo was great … with snow-capped mountains as the back drop, yellow flowers blooming along the road sides.

At last, we arrived at the world famous Lake Tekapo and the little church by the side of the lake- The Good Shepherd Church.

We allowed ourselves some luxury by staying at a motel by the lake side.
